2001-2003 Workforce Studies

The 2001-2003 California Child Care Workforce Studies

In 2001 The California Child Care Resource and Referral Network, along with the Center for the Child Care Workforce, and the Institute of Industrial Relations, at UC Berkeley, took on a research project to better define the child care workforce in California. The California Child Care Workforce Study, funded by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, surveyed licensed child care center staff and family child care home providers to provide reliable and accurate data on:

- The number of staff working in licensed child care positions;
- The qualifications of those in the workforce;
- Staff tenure and turnover rates; and
- The wages for both child care center staff and family child care providers.

Thanks to additional funding from the Packard Foundation, in 2003 the Workforce Study embarked on a second round of pilot testing and surveyed centers in both San Mateo and San Benito counties. This second year pilot provided further direction and aided in improving the center data collection, taking into consideration lessons learned from the first year project.

Reports are available for the 2003 San Benito child care center study and the 2001 family child care and child care center studies. A general report summary comparing findings across counties, the 2001 Preliminary Results and Future Plans report, is also available.
